The Best Guacamole

Guacamole and your stand mixer.  It’s probably not something that you would normally think of at the same time, they seem quite different.  But your mixer is the perfect tool for quickly and easily making a batch of guacamole without having to work too hard.

A recipe for homemade guacamole

Traditional guacamole was made by mashing avocados and sea salt, using a mortar and pestle.  Hard work but the results were spectacular.  Eventually other ingredients were added, such as lime juice, cilantro, onion and jalapeno.  Mexico is home to about 35% of the world’s avocado crop and most food historians believe that avocados are originally from south central Mexico.

Is Guacamole Healthy?

As with most foods, the answer is a firm maybe.  Avocados are high in fat but it is the healthier monounsaturated variety.  Many people of a low fat diet like avocados for the texture and taste, it replaces other fats that are not part of their diets.

Avocados also contain something called phytochemicals, which has been shown to help reduce cholesterol levels.  Other natural chemicals found in this fruit can be helpful to eye health.

The other side of the ledger, however, shows that a large serving of guac can have calories and fat add up pretty quickly.  Adding things like sour cream don’t help.  Here is another case of moderation is the rule.

Guacamole Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe avocados, peeled and pitted
  • 1/3 cup chopped sweet onion
  • 1 small tomato, seeded and chopped
  • 1 celery rib, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro, optional
  • Tortilla chips

Fresh Guacamole Made With A Stand Mixe


In a small bowl, mash avocados. Stir in onion, tomato, celery, garlic, lemon juice, Worcestershire, salt, pepper and, if desired, cilantro. Chill 1 hour before serving. Serve with chips.
