OUR TOP 5 STAND UP MIXERS FOR 2021(5 / 5)
#1 KitchenAid Artisan Tilt Head Stand Up Mixer
Hands down this stylish, well made mixer from KitchenAid is our #1 choice for best stand up mixer for 2019. Priced right and with a well deserved reputation for quality the Artisan tilt head mixer (model KSM150PSER) should be on the wish list of every baker of any skill level.
Currently there are over 20 different colors available, guaranteeing that you will be able to find the perfect color to match your kitchen decor. The heavy base keeps your stand up mixer stable, even when mixing the heaviest bread dough without looking too industrial and bulky. The tilt head gives you great ease of access and allows you to add ingredients without a mess. The controls on the side are well placed and very easy to use. This unit offers 10 speeds which are more than enough for most bakers. It’s heavy duty motor runs very quietly but is strong enough to get your toughest mixing job. Even running at top speed this stand up mixer is still nicely quiet.
This model comes with basic attachments: a whisk, a dough hook, a flat beater paddle and a poor shield. This is standard with many mixers but we would like to see a few more attachments included such as a silicone edged beater. The flip side of only having 4 pieces of attachments included is that KitchenAid offers a staggering number of attachments that work with this mixer and most are extremely user friendly. Hozodo makes a great meat grinder attachment (See Here) and there is a great 3 piece pasta roller and cutter attachment (See Here) from KitchenAid.
-Durability. KitchenAid has a sterling reputation with kitchen appliances and this mixer matches that reputation.
-Heavy duty but quiet motor with 10 speeds for all of your mixing needs.
-A power hub that allows you to attach a wide variety of implements including a meat grinder, pasta roller and juicer.
-A good sized 5 quart bowl. Some stand up mixers are now using 4.5 quart bowls and this can lead to spills and general messes from using a bowl that is too small.
-Only 3 attachments and a spill lid are included with this unit. We would like to see a few more added.
-Some users have reported silver residue in the mixer bowl that required a lot of scrubbing to remove.
#2 Cuisinart 5.5 Quart Stand Up Mixer
(4.5 / 5)
One of the most well known names in kitchen appliances, Cuisinart has produced an excellent stand up mixer that came in #2 in our rating for 2021. Priced surprisingly well for a Cuisinart product, we liked this quality stand up mixer (model SM-50BC) a lot and recommend it highly.
The first thing that sold us on this mixer is the 5.5 quart bowl. Yes, the KitchenAid has a bowl of 5 quart size but far too many stand up mixers have bowls that are only 4.5 quart. This larger bowl was a nice feature when making larger batches of cookies or when you are kneading dough. Here is a perfect example where size truly does matter.
Cuisinart used a larger motor with this mixer than what KitchenAid and Hamilton Beach use for there mixers, plus this unit comes with 12 speeds. This is a nice option to have (as long as it didn’t raise the price too much) although 12 speeds seems unnecessary. The speeds are controlled with a dial on the side which concerns us a bit. It seems awkward and we prefer the slide control. However, it’s not a major sticking point and doesn’t affect the performance of the mixer.
Like the KitchenAid, the Cuisinart comes with 3 attachments and a splash guard. Again, we would like to see a silicon flat beater included. The power hub is located on the front of the unit and there is a nice assortment of attachments that can be added like an excellent meat grinder (See Here) and a really fun ice cream maker (See Here).
-Really well priced! Different colors are listed at different prices but all are under $180 which is below many other brand names.
-Very powerful 500 watt 12 speed motor. There is a lot of horsepower with this stand up mixer.
-A larger than average 5.5 quart stainless steel mixing bowl. This bowl can handle the largest of mixing jobs.
-A well known and respected brand name. Cuisinart has a proven track record of quality kitchen appliances.
-Only 3 attachments and a splash guard are included with this package.
-Not as many optional attachments for purchase. While the KitchenAid has about 15 optional attachments the Cuisinart has less than 6.
-Only 6 available colors. While they are nice and chrome works in any kitchen, it would be nice to see some fun colors added.
#3 Hamilton Beach Eclectrics 4.5 Quart Stand Up Mixer(4 / 5)
Founded in 1910 in Wisconsin, Hamilton Beach has been producing high quality kitchen appliances for over 100 years and this stylish space-age designed stand up mixer is no exception. a 400 watt 12 speed motor is strong enough for almost any mixing job while still staying relatively quiet. As with the Cuisinart, 12 speeds may be overkill but they work nicely and we really like the slide control on the side of the mixer.
Hamilton Beach calls its mixing motion planetary mixing action which rotates the beaters around for even and complete bowl coverage. Actually this motion is used in most quality mixers (KitchenAid has it) but it is something to look for when buying a stand up mixer. You just need to search out the marketing term that each company uses. Whatever the name, this motion does a really good job of mixing light mixtures to heavy breads. Any recipe that you have will be easy to mix with this mixer.
This mixer has a nice bowl lock feature that ensures the bowl stays in place. That said, Hamilton Beach is using only a 4.5 quart bowl, we would really like to see a larger bowl. While this size bowl is usually sufficient for your needs there are times when a larger bowl would make a big difference. There is a nice tilt head function that releases easily and the head tilts back quite a ways, allowing you great access to the bowl. While there are only 4 colors to chose from they are universal and will fit in nicely with most any kitchen decor.
One drawback to this unit is the attachments. While the 3 included (whisk, dough hook and flat beater) and the splash guard are fine it is difficult to find other accessories for this mixer. However, this package will handle all of your mixing needs and other attachments like a meat grind or pasta roller are not necessary for everyday mixing.
-Very well priced. You can find this mixer for under $200.
-Durable and well made. There are no flimsy plastic pieces and the stand is solid die cast.
-Well respected company. No one stays in business for over 100 years without making quality products.
-Powerful motor with 12 speeds. You will be able to mix almost anything with this stand up mixer.
-4.5 quart bowl. While the bowl locks for security on the stand we would like to see a larger bowl.
-Only 4 colors. They are good colors but we would like more.
-Few attachments or accessories for this brand.
#4 Lasantec Tilt Head 8 Speed Stand Up Mixer(4 / 5)
Lasantec is a somewhat lesser known player in kitchen appliances and we didn’t know much about them until we tested this mixer. It was a pleasant surprise to find that this was a very nice stand up mixer and it performed very well in all of our tests. A larger than average 550 watt motor has 8 speeds and is fairly quiet. We have commented before on some mixers having unnecessary numbers of speeds and we think the 8 that are available with this mixer is just right.
One of the truly unique features of this mixer is a double shaft design for the bread hooks. Yes, hooks as in 2 of them. This is the only mixer we tested with a double bread hook and we loved it! You have a lot of power with the 550 watt motor and add the double hook action and you have a fantastic kneading machine. Also included with this unit is a big 5.5 quart stainless steel mixing bowl. We have stated our dislike for small bowls and this 5.5 quart bowl will handle anything that you attempt to mix.
The head tilts back and locks and is fairly standard in its operation. The bowl can be locked into the stand and stays secure even when mixing bread dough. We have some concern about steel used for the casing. Most of the other units tested had die cast metal casings and we felt that the materials used here, while solid, weren’t as heavy duty as some of the others.
While this unit comes with the standard 4 piece attachment package (whisk, bread hook, flat beater paddle and splash guard) it does stand out with the unique double bread hooks. We were unable to find any additional attachments and there is no power hub with this unit. As for colors, you can have it in red. That’s it, only red.
-Double bread hooks. We cannot praise enough the double bread hooks and how well they worked.
-Price. The Lasantec mixer and attachments is very moderately priced, you can usually find it for under $170.
-5.5 quart stainless steel bowl. A big well made bowl. You will appreciate the size.
-Lighter weight casing. It feels sturdy but not as solid as the KitchenAid or the Cuisinart.
-One color. While it’s a vivid, bright red that we like, it is available in only one color.
-No other attachments or accessories available.
-No power hub
#5 Vivohome Multi-Functional Stand Up Mixer(3.5 / 5)
What exactly is a multi-functional stand up mixer? We were somewhat taken aback with this Swiss army knife version of a stand up mixer but we had a lot of fun using all of the assorted attachments. We whipped up smoothies, ground some meat and, while we were at it, used it as a mixer.
Where do we start with this unit? First off, it is a good stand up mixer. It has a really large 650 watt 6 speed motor, the largest motor on any of the mixers that we tested. It needs to have a motor of this size as it has some attachments that will require a lot of horsepower. More on those later. It comes with a 6 quart stainless steel bowl, the largest bowl of any of the mixers that we tested. While it’s a large bowl it doesn’t overwhelm the unit and as we have stated before, we prefer larger bowls for mixing.
Now we need to talk about the multi-functional parts. This package comes with not only a mixer and the usual assortment of attachments but also with a meat grinder attachment (for use with the front power hub), a blender attachment (for use with the back power hub) and a pasta maker and a sausage maker (for use with the front power hub). At first we didn’t think the packaging was correct-they couldn’t all be included, could they? Yes, they were and it was a delight to try all of those attachments. All worked well and the motor is powerful enough to handle any function.
Amazingly this whole package can be purchased for less than $145, an unbelievable price for a good mixer and a whole kitchen full of attachments. The usual 4 piece assortment (whisk. bread hook, flat beater paddle and splash guard) are included as well as the other accessories already mentioned, making this a hard to believe deal.
-Fantastic assortment of attachments and accessories. Meat grinder, sausage maker, pasta maker and a blender are standard accessories.
-6 quart stainless steel mixing bowl. This is the largest bowl of any of the mixers that we tested and we loved the plus size convenience.
-Powerful 650 watt 6 speed motor. You need power to properly run all of those accessories and the 650 watts available are enough to handle any task.
-Only two colors, red and chrome, are available.
-Vivohome is not a well known brand name. Repairs may be a bit more complicated.
-A rather clumsy dial on the base of the mixer.
